Mike Reed Wins 2011 National Golden Gloves

Mike Reed (Dream Team Boxing) of Waldorf, MD defeated George Rincon (Texas) 4-1 in the championship bout of the 2011 National Golden Gloves Tournament of Champions. By doing so, Reed earned a spot at the upcoming US Olympic Team Trials to be held later this summer in Colorado. That tournament will determine the 2012 London US Olympic Boxing Team.

Jerry Odom (NoXcuse Boxing) also competed in the finals today at 178lbs. but lost a close bout 3-2 to Caleb Plant (Knoxville).

Denver's
"King" Louie Byrd (Backyard Brawlers) won his 4th consecutive National Golden Gloves title in four different weight classes. This is a first in the history of the tournament. The tournament has been held without interruption since 1928!!

Tramaine "Midget" Williams (Ring One) also secured his spot at the US Olympic Team Trials in the 123lbs. division. During the week of boxing, the New Haven, Connecticut native only lost on one judges card during one bout. If you don't know his pedigree, check out this past post about
my favorite amateur boxer.
