1977 Golden Gloves Mitch "Blood" Green vs. Calvin Cross

Calvin Cross (Chicago) vs. Mitch "Blood" Green (NYC) in the Heavyweight Final of the 1977 InterCity Golden Gloves. Green was the 4-time Golden Gloves Champion (NYC) and compiled an amateur record of 64-7.

Green had a history of confrontations with Mike Tyson. Green is best known for his out-of-the-ring antics with Tyson. The high point was an incident that began in the early morning hours of August 23, 1988 in Harlem. Tyson was shopping at Dapper Dans, a Harlem clothing store. Green had heard that Tyson was in the area and went to track him down in hopes of securing a rematch. A scuffle ensued and Green allegedly threw a punch and Tyson responded with a straight right to Green's nose, requiring five stitches. Tyson broke his hand in the incident and had to postpone his fight with Frank Bruno. Later a New York jury would award Green $45000 in damages in a civil lawsuit against Tyson.

Green was a former NYC gang leader, who had a character in the movie "The Warriors" based on himself

He would finish his career with a record of 320-22, only to turn down a huge payday of 5 million dollars to fight Muhammad Ali. Stevenson was a Socialists who felt it was more important to remain in Cuba as a role model for Cuban youth and an example that capitalism and getting paid was not the most important thing. When asked about the offer he turned down, he reportedly said "Why do I need 5 million dollars, when I have the love of 11 million Cubans?". Poll Results: Which USA Olympic Boxing Team was the greatest?

With 63% of all the votes, DC Amateur Boxing readers selected the 1984 USA Olympic Team as the best overall team. Members included: Meldrick Taylor, Pernell Whitaker, Mark Breland, Frank Tate, Virgil Hill, Evander Holyfield and Tyrell Biggs.

With 18% of all votes, the 1976 and 1988 teams tied in second place. The '76 team included, Leo Randolph, Sugar Ray Leonard, Howard Davis, Charles Mooney (of Charles Mooney Academy of Boxing), Michael Spinks, and Leon Spinks. The '88 team included Roy Jones, Jr., Michael Carbajal, Ray Mercer and Riddick Bowe and Kennedy McKinney.

132lbs. bought between a 20 year old Aaron Pryor (Cincinnati, Oh) defending his national title against 17 year old Tommy Hearns (Detroit Michigan). Pryor was the National Golden Gloves Champion, National AAU Champion and had 14 international victories. Hearns was a 3-time Junior Olympic chanmpion making his debut at the tournament.

Beltway Amateurs Win Gold at Arnold Invitational Boxing Championshiops

17 boxers from the DC area brought back championship titles at this year's Arnold Sports Festival's Boxing Invitational in Columbus, Ohio. The boxing tournament was part of the festival which has become the world's largest multi-sport weekend event since it's began 20 years ago. There were over 17,000 athletes competing in 38 events (12 Olympic sports) and the total attendence for this year's event was over 130,000 people!

The boxing event featured boxers from as far away Iowa and Washington state. Full results can be accessed through this link. Historical Amateur Records Online Database

I found this site (Boxing-Records.com) being passed around and referenced as s resource for looking up amateur boxing records. It appears to have been updated last in December 2007. It doesn't list the sources, but it may come in handy in settling the occasional gym discussion (read:argument).

The most prolific amateur record that I know of was 3-time British Olympian Dick McTaggart, who was an unbelieveable 610-24. He won a gold and bronze Olympic medal in the '56 and '60 Olympic games.
